A Zlatan Ibrahimović penalty was enough for AC Milan to beat rivals FC Internazionale Milano and return to the Serie A summit after S.S. Lazio had briefly gone top earlier in the day.
AC Milan remain on top in Serie A after a Zlatan Ibrahimović penalty inflicted a first home league defeat on FC Internazionale Milano since 22 March 2008.
Milan were briefly replaced by S.S. Lazio at the summit after the capital outfit beat SSC Napoli earlier in the day but they did not take long to resume the ascendancy. The decisive strike came after just five minutes when Ibrahimović rifled in from the spot having been felled by Marco Materazzi. The Rossoneri played the final half an hour a man light following Ignazio Abate's dismissal but hung on to leave the titleholders six points off the pace in fifth.
Lazio are just one point behind in second. Mauro Zárate put the capital side in front against Napoli on 15 minutes after chesting down a pass from Stefano Mauri, and he then set up Sergio Floccari to double the advantage just beyond the hour mark.
Elsewhere, US Città di Palermo moved up to seventh by defeating Calcio Catania 3-1 courtesy of a Javier Pastore hat-trick, while a treble for Antonio Di Natale earned Udinese Calcio a 4-0 success against US Lecce that lifted them to eighth. Bologna FC climbed out of the bottom three after they saw off Brescia Calcio 1-0 and there were 1-0 away wins for Parma FC, at AS Bari, and Genoa CFC, at Cagliari Calcio.
